On Thursday, June 13, an Ado-Ekiti High Court condemned Enoch Gbinyiam, a pastor at Winners Chapel Church in Omuo-Ekiti, to one year in prison for raping a youngster in his church.
Gbinyiam faced a one-count accusation in court. Julius Ajiba, the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), told the court that the pastor raped a church member’s daughter during a visit to the vicarage.
According to Aliba, the victim would typically visit the vicarage to help the pastor’s wife with housework and to instruct and support his small children with their schoolwork.

“It was during one of her visits to the mission house that the defendant sedated a bottle of fanta and offered her to drink.
The youngster drank the Fanta and fell asleep, only to wake up and discover that she was bleeding heavily from her vagina.”
Aliba informed the court that the police were notified, and the pastor was arrested and charged in court. He claimed that the offence violated Section 2 of the Gender Based Violence (Prohibition) Law, 2019. He used four witnesses and two exhibits to prove his argument.
The preacher, through his counsel, Adeyinka Opaleke, pleaded not guilty to the accusation brought against him. He called one witness and presented a piece of evidence to defend himself.
Justice O.I.O Ogunyemi decided that the prosecution established its case beyond reasonable doubt, convicted the defendant, and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a Correctional Centre.
