Veteran Ghanaian musician and Presidential Staffer for the Black Star Experience, Rex Omar requests that Ghanaian artists should direct their efforts toward developing and honoring local Award Programs, particularly the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMAs) rather than pursuing international recognition.
Through his interview with Sisil Prempeh, the Highlife-Legend proclaimed that Grammy Awards were not established for Ghana and musicians should stop focusing on them as a top prize.
Rex Omar expressed his surprise when he hears Ghanaians discussing the Grammy Awards, since they exist for American audiences.
“Anyone who shows disrespect toward the Ghana Music Awards while dreaming about attending the Grammy Awards fails to understand the situation. The Grammy was established without considering your name,” he said.
“Other prominent awards including BET emerged from American media foundations so their priorities will not always serve to promote Ghanaian culture or music,” he added.
During this period many Ghanaian musicians express dissatisfaction about missing out on international honors while Rex Omar shares his opinion about the matter. The music legend explains that this perspective about awards shows is incorrect.
The establishment of our own Award-Show is possible according to his recommendation. To him, by speaking positively about it and executing it with excellence other international nations will seek to join this initiative.

Rex declared that establishing a respected local award ceremony needs more than trophies to succeed.
He said: “Developing a system which establishes a complete artistic space gives artists valuable recognition and expansion possibilities throughout their domestic market.”
Receiving an award does not represent the full scope of this experience, according to him. Developing meaningful impact requires the creation of an entire value-based system that includes ecosystem development.
As a matter of fact, his statements have initiated an online dialogue which pits fans and musicians against each other about where Ghana should direct its musical resources.
A user on X (formerly Twitter) declared that Rex Omar delivers precise information in his statements, saying: “We need to build the TGMAs into such dominant excellence that global music nations seek victories at these ceremonies.“
The worth of Ghanaian artists is what Rex Omar wants the musical community to understand, according to his viewpoint, while recognizing that the fundamental worth begins domestically.
