The government has procured $1 million to assist more than 1,500 peasant farmers in northern Ghana through a major agricultural development program. The Feed Ghana Project, launched under its new initiative, provides support to small-scale farmers through the enhancement of vegetable production and increased livelihoods.
Eric Opoku, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, declared this development during his Citi FM interview on April 14th, 2025. He clarified that the allocated funding targets existing vegetable farmers who grow tomatoes but need help expanding their operations because they lack sufficient capital.
The initiative is not meant to create new farming projects from zero, according to Mr. Opoku. These farmers currently cultivate the land since they are already active practitioners of agriculture. The primary responsibility falls on our organization to assist farmers in achieving better results from their current operations at a greater production scale.
The Ministry plans to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Apex Bank, which will be signed on Wednesday, April 16. The agreement provides a framework to distribute funds through registered farmers while special attention goes to cooperative members who have registered.
The government believes this step supports its dual objectives to decrease vegetable imports and build Ghana into a dominant agricultural producer in the region.
The Success Tools Extend Further Than Financial Support
The minister specifically stated that financial assistance forms only a component of the entire program. The government has planned to offer technical support to farmers as part of their services. Beyond monetary support, the government will provide farmers with premium seeds and contemporary farming supplies, together with distribution networks for maintaining continuous vegetable cultivation throughout the year.

The government technical team has selected ideal seed varieties that we distribute to generate higher crop production, according to the minister. Through internal empowerment, our country believes it will reach superior levels than those maintained by Burkina Faso.
A Key Pillar of Feed Ghana
The intervention holds a central position within the Feed Ghana Project, launched recently by President Mahama as a part of his agricultural transformation agenda.
Through the program, the government seeks to achieve a reduction in food imports alongside job generation and food security via systematic local development in the vegetable, grain, poultry, and industrial production sectors.
Mr. Opoku stated that this farming assistance brings attention to the key sector that requires targeted support at the community level to achieve maximum results.
He declared that this initiative marks the start of future developments. The government plans to develop an agricultural framework that serves the needs of both commercial operations and personal vegetable gardens.
