Spain edged past Germany in a keenly contested 1st quarter final match of Euro 2024
The 1st quarter final match of the 2024 Euros in Germany took place at the Stuttgart Arena as Spain took on Germany with both teams poised to make it to the semi finals.
Spain lined up with Unai Simon in the post, Carvajal, Laporte, Le Normand and Cucurella in defense. Rodri, Fabian Ruiz and Pedri started in midfield while Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams and Morata led the attack for the Spanish national team.
Germany also started with Manuel Neuer as the goalkeeper. Kimmich, Rudiger, Tah and Raum also started in defense for Germany while Kross, Can and Gundogan also held the fort in Midfield. Coach Julian Nagelsmann maintain the attacking trio of Musiala, Kai Havertz and Leroy Sane.
Spain took the lead through Dani Olmo who replaced Pedri on the 8th minute. Lamine Yamal delivered a perfect pull out pass that met the waiting right foot of Dani Olmo.
Just when Spain thought they were cruising to quarter-final victory over the host nation, a header from Joshua Kimmich located Florian Wirtz who got the Germans their equalizer.
Germany’s protest for a penalty in the second half of extra time after a shot from Musiala struck the hand of Cucurella proved unfruitful as referee Anthony Taylor overlooked the call.
A mistake from Antonio Rudiger proved costly for Germany as Mikel Merino’s header was enough to give Spain the win over the host nation at the Stuttgart Arena.
